Apple's Hi, Speed Event

The Main Point

Apple’s Hi, Speed event announced a ton of new features for Iphone 12. It seems like Iphone 12 is going to be an amazing deal, no matter what model you choose. The new homepod mini also seems like a pretty good deal. There were also a few other interesting partnerships, and they removed the charger from the box. Overall, though, Apple has done a pretty good job this year.

Apple’s Hi, Speed event started off with their usual cinematics. Then, as the show went on, they kept announcing so many new things, it was hard to keep track of them all. They may have only announced the new Iphones and the Homepod Mini, but those are just the products. There are so many new features in the new Iphones, I can’t even count them all. The show was very well produced, with some beautiful cinematics, and a lot of well designed cuts. There were even a few collabs, with Verizon and, surprisingly, League of Legends. It was an amazing show, though.

Apple Homepod Mini from High Speed Event

Homepod Mini

The Homepod Mini was the first thing that Apple announced at the event. It will have computational sound, which will allow it to tune itself to bolster sound. In late 2020, the Homepod Mini will also be able to detect when your Iphone is near. This will allow you to easily transfer playing music between the two. It will also trigger visual and haptic responses on the phone. The Homepod Mini will also be able to access apps on the Iphone using Siri. This will include the calendar, messages and Music apps. This new speaker will also feature Intercom, which will allow the sending of messages from the Homepod Mini to any other Apple Device. The Homepod Mini will cost $99 and will be available to order on Nov. 6. It will begin shipping on Nov. 16. It will come in black and white, and will be very similar to a sphere in shape. Overall, this seems like a much better deal than the original Homepod.

Apple Iphone 12 Pro Hi, Speed event

Iphone 12

Now for the main feature, the Iphone 12. This year Apple has 4 new models, as was Leaked. The Iphone 12 Mini, Iphone 12, Iphone 12 Pro and Iphone 12 Pro Max. All of these new models seem like great deals. They will all feature 5G, and are the first Iphones to do so. There are many other new features, some specific to the higher end models. The only difference between the 12 and 12 mini is the display size. Now it’s time to check out all of the new features.

Pricing

The whole Iphone 12 lineup is pretty well priced. The Iphone 12 Mini starts at $699. I think that this is a pretty fair price considering what you’re getting ( and also the apple tax). The Iphone 12 is only $100 more, at $799. There is a bit larger of a price gap between the 12 and the pro models, though. The Pro starts at $1000, and the Pro Max starts at $1099. This is pretty fair, too, as the Pro and Pro Max have quite a bit larger displays. They also have a few more features, including better cameras.

Storage

The Iphone 12 lineup has pretty reasonable storage amounts, though the lowest ones are a bit lower than competitors. The 12 and 12 Mini’s storage options include 64gb, 128gb and 256gb. The Pro Models storage options include 128gb, 256gb and all the way up to 512gb. These amounts  seem pretty fair for the (somewhat) low prices. Personally though, I don’t think that I will need more than 128gb of storage for a while.

The New Chip

The whole Iphone 12 lineup runs on Apple’s new A14 chip. This chip is supposed to be the fastest in the industry. According to Apple, it will be able to deliver console quality games. This  is a big deal for mobile gamers. Also, it runs on Apple’s new 5 nm process, which (as they reminded us many times) is industry leading. This will also increase photo quality, as it will have much more processing powers. Machine learning is also supposed to be up to 80% faster than the Iphone 11. This new chip seems to be very promising.

Camera

The Iphone 12 Mini and 12 have the same cameras. They both feature regular and ultrawide cameras. These are supposed to have much better image processing, and improvements to night mode, as well as the sensors. The Pro and Pro Max add optical zoom, which is 2x on the Pro and 2.5x on the Pro Max. They also both have a LiDAR sensor, which allows for better augmented reality. It also enables you to map out rooms, along with many other things. Another feature the Pro models have that the normal ones don’t, other than a third rear camera, is the ability to capture and edit Dolby Vision HDR video, right on the phone. The Pro Max also has slightly better cameras than the Pro. All of the phones can record and edit 4k 60fps video.

Magsafe

Magsafe is a big new feature. It is this circular magnet in the center of the back of the phone. It allows the Iphone 12 to attach magnetically to cases, wireless charging docks and case wallets. This feature can also be used with a case on. My only hope is that they add more magsafe accessories. For now, it seems kind of like a lost opportunity, as there could be many more interesting products for this.

Display

The new Iphone 12 features Apple’s best display. This is their Super Retina XDR display. It is an OLED display, and is also supposed to have 3rd gen HDR. Apple has also worked with a new form of Corning glass. They call this ceramic shield, and it is supposed to offer four times the drop protection. This seems great, so I hope that it turns out to be as good as Apple claims.

Design

The Iphone 12 and 12 mini come in black, blue, green, red and white. The 12 Pro and Pro Max come in blue, gold, gray and silver. The Pro models also have a metallic sheen to them. The back of each of these phones has the same ceramic shield that is on the screen. Apple has also decided to go for a more boxy look for this phone, which I personally like. A questionable decision that they have made, though, is removing the earpods and charging cable from the box. They say this is to help the environment, but this also means that you will have to buy a charging cable and brick separately if you do not already have one. This also allowed them to greatly decrease the size of the box, and it now looks quite interesting.

Verizon

Yes, I know what you’re thinking. There was Verizon news at an Apple event? Isn’t Apple too selfish for that? Well, Apple actually had Verizon’s chairman up on stage, and he talked about Verizon’s 5G network. They announced that they are going to be bringing 5G Ultra Wideband to many other large cities in the US. But what about those of us that don’t live in big cities? Well, they are also going to be taking their normal 5G network nationwide. This is actually big news. Yes, I just said that. There was actually big news at Apple’s Hi, Speed event, about Verizon.

League of Legends

Wait, first Verizon, then League of Legends? This makes even less sense than Verizon did? Yep, that’s right. Not only did Apple partner with Verizon, but they also partnered with League of Legends. Apparently, there is a version of League of Legends coming to mobile. This version is called League of Legends: Wild Rift. On the Iphone 12, it will supposedly have extremely good visuals. It is also supposed to be a great experience, even though it is traditionally a PC game. This may not be entirely Apple news, but I still think that it is pretty cool that Apple is doing this.
