PS5 May Not Receive Some Bethesda Games

Xbox has purchased bethesda

The Main Point

Some of Bethesda’s games may not come out on Playstation 5. This is due to Xbox’s recent purchase of Bethesda for 7.5 billion dollars. Kotaku recently had an interview with Phil Spencer, head of Xbox. He let us know a bit more about their plans for Bethesda, and the future of the company. Overall, though, he didn’t let us know what the plans were for releasing games on PS5.

Ever since Xbox bought Bethesda, Playstation players have been worried about some of Bethesda’s games becoming exclusives. And they’re right to be scared. I mean, what company would want to help their competitors? But, so far, we don’t really know what Xbox’s plan for Bethesda is. There was a recent interview by Kotaku with Phil Spencer, the director of Xbox, and he talked about Bethesda. He said a few things to support each side, so it didn’t really help too much. All Bethesda games will come to PC and X-cloud, though, as well as Xbox.

What Phil Said

Throughout the interview, Phil said multiple things to support some Bethesda games not coming to PS5. Although, he also said multiple things to support Bethesda games coming to PS5. According to what he said, it would make sense for some of Bethesda’s games (such as Elder Scrolls 6) to be Microsoft Ecosystem exclusives. When he was asked about whether Xbox would be able to get back their $7.5 billion investment if they didn’t release Elder Scrolls 6 on PS5, he said, “Yes.” A very short and simple answer. But, after that he explained further, “This deal was not done to take games away from another player base like that.” This is quite reassuring, but later in the interview he said, ” When I think about where people are going to be playing and the number of devices that we had, and we have xCloud and PC and Game Pass and our console base, I don’t have to go ship those games on any other platform other than the platforms that we support in order to kind of make the deal work for us. Whatever that means.” This helps the fact that some future Bethesda games, if not all, may be Microsoft ecosystem exclusives

Our thoughts

Overall, we can’t really be sure what Xbox has planned for Bethesda yet. Phil Spencer said things that show that it could go either way. Xbox has also said that they might take it game by game. I personally think that this is what will happen. Xbox has traditionally been one of the nice guys in the gaming industry, but they need to profit, too. This is why it would make perfect sense for them to release some games on PS5 and other platforms, while keeping others for themselves. In the profit category, keeping the games for themselves would make the most sense, as it would cause more people to buy gaming pcs with Windows, or buy Xboxes and Gamepass. At this point, though, it could really go either way. Only the people at Xbox really know what’s going to happen, so we’re just going to have to wait and see.
