Minecraft Dungeons Review: Does it live up to the hype?

Minecraft Dungeons Review

9/10 Amazing

The Main Point

During our Minecraft Dungeons review, we had a ton of fun. This game really is amazing. You may not be able to build or mine, and it’s not really anything like traditional Minecraft, but that doesn’t matter. They just did such a good job at making a dungeon crawling game. There are so many weapons, tons of reasons to replay the game and so many other things. Mojang did a great job with this one.

The Good

  • Tons of weapons and items
  • Lots of fun
  • A bit of story
  • Two new DLCs

The Bad

  • No building or mining
  • No crossplay at launch

When Minecraft Dungeons was announced at E3 last year, it got everyone excited. It had an amazing trailer, and looked like it would be tons of fun. I mean, who doesn’t want a Minecraft themed dungeon crawler? But, over a year later, after it has finally released, does it live up to the hype? Well, I personally think it does, and during our Minecraft Dungeons review, nothing changed my mind. Even though I can’t play with some of my friends because there is no crossplay, and it isn’t really that traditional Minecraft type of game, it is still tons of fun. There are so many things to do in this game, as you want to get the best gear possible. This game has done an amazing job at being the second game to  join the Minecraft group.

Story

Minecraft Dungeons main point isn’t to be a story game, but there still is some story in there. I don’t want to spoil it, so I won’t tell you about any of it, but, just so you know, it’s a pretty good one. For a game based on fighting huge block monsters, getting better gear and getting the highest power rating possible, it still manages to do a pretty good job telling a story. If you fully play the game to keep getting better gear, you will keep replaying the story over and over, but it can still seem pretty fun. It isn’t like you just finish the story and your done. After you finish your first play through, you move onto a higher difficulty where you replay the story. This can become repetitive, but if you want to get the best gear possible, you’re going to have to do it. There are some DLCs that add to the story, but we will talk more about those later.

Gameplay

Playing Minecraft Dungeons will almost never get boring. There is always better gear to get, and more powerful mobs to fight. This is one of the reasons that Minecraft Dungeons is such a good game. You can play the game for tons of hours, and still keep getting better gear. Now, let’s talk about how items work. You have a sword, bow, armor and 3 artifacts. There are tons of different types of swords, armor and bows. Also, there are a ton of different artifacts you can find. There are different rarities of each piece of gear, and they all have power levels. When it comes to artifacts, though, each has their own special ability that will help you decide which to use. The unique rarity of armor, swords and bows also each have their own special abilities that make them special. You can get different gear either by purchasing it through the villagers at home base with emeralds, or by opening chests and killing mobs on levels. There are three different difficulties, and after you finish each, you move onto the next. After you finish the final difficulty, you have reached endgame. There are many mini-bosses, as well as bosses throughout the game, with each having a different strategy to defeat. As you can tell, this game has tons of things to do, and can be loads of fun.

Minecraft dungeons jungle dlc

DLC

Mojang has confirmed three dlc for Minecraft Dungeons, and plan to release many future ones after the first two. The first two, Jungle Awakens and Creeping Winter, have already been released, and add a ton of new things into the game. There are multiple new levels, new bosses, mobs and gear. The first update of the two, as the title clearly states, is entirely jungle themed. The story has also been continued in this dlc, but I will leave you to find out where it goes. In the second dlc, Creeping Winter, everything is themed around winter and ice/snow. The story has been continued in this one, as well. The third dlc, which is set to release in december or early 2021, is called howling peaks. It will have the same type of updates that the other two dlc had, and will also have a free update release alongside it, also like the first two dlc. This free update, though, will add a fourth difficulty to help liven things up for endgame players.

Crossplay

Now, let’s talk about the main feature that everyone has been missing in Minecraft Dungeons: Crossplay. Mojang told us at launch that they would be adding crossplay, but it still has not been released. And that has been a big problem for me, as I have many friends that play on console only. But, thankfully, crossplay is set to finally release this December in a free update. I will finally be able to play with my friends in this game, as I have been waiting to do since launch. After they release crossplay, this game may also deserve a 10/10 rating, as once that is added, this game will really be amazing. It is kind of weird, though, that a Minecraft game, even though Minecraft basically pioneered crossplay, released without having crossplay. I mean, there isn’t even PvP, so you would think it would be pretty easy. Anyway, it’s great that they’re finally releasing crossplay.
