10/10 Q's Pick

The Main Point

Pistol Whip is an amazing game. During testing for our Pistol Whip Review, I had a ton of fun. I took out all of the enemies on each song, feeling the coolest that I’ve ever felt while doing it. And after it was all done, I’d worked so hard that my legs were painfully sore for 2 days. This is definitely my favorite VR game that I have played.

The Good

  • Tons of fun
  • Pretty good music
  • You feel amazing
  • Frequent Updates
  • A really good workout

The Bad

  • Being sore for a few days isn’t fun

Pistol Whip is a great game. It is fully deserving of the 10/10 Q’s Pick rating we gave it. I mean, how often do you get to have a ton of fun and get a great workout, too. Fighting off every enemy that comes at you, then dodging all of their bullets. You get to feel like John Wick every time you play, and you get a good workout. There are so many songs to play, and they are constantly adding more. And, there are even modifiers to add some more into the game. I love Pistol Whip.

Gameplay

Pistol Whip has some of the best gameplay of any VR game. It is similar to Beat Saber in the fact that you are playing to music. You get a higher score the more shots you hit on beat, and it also keeps track of the percentage of shots that you miss, which also affects your score. There are also things called pistol whips, which raise your score. Every time you get hit, either by a wall or a bullet, you take damage. If you get hit twice before you heal, you die. Also, there is a modifier called hardcore mode where you can only get hit once. During levels enemies (which look like glass humanoid figures, similar to Superhot) will run out either from behind walls or appear in front of you. There are 3 types of enemies. Normal enemies only take one hit, armored enemies take 2 and heavily armored enemies take 4 hits. As you are going through a level, you move forward across the floor into new areas. Normally, you only have one gun, but there is a modifier that gives you 2. I think that this makes the game much cooler and more fun. You can also adjust player settings and game settings. Modifiers can either raise your score or lower it, depending on whether they make the game harder or easier. Overall, this game is a ton of fun.

Levels

Currently, Pistol Whip has 20 levels. This includes challenges and training, so without those included, there are 18 different levels. Each level has a different song and different map. Some levels are more difficult than others, so you may not be able to beat all of the levels as easily as you can beat some of them. There are 3 different difficulty options on each level, which include easy, medium and hard. Each level also has its own leaderboard, showing the top scores from around the world and the modifiers used to achieve those scores. Some of the songs have words, while others don’t. There are songs from many different artists, none of which I’ve heard of before. Personally, I don’t like the music as much as I do in Beat Saber, but it is still pretty good. Each level in this game is still tons of fun, though.

Updates

Pistol Whip currently has only 18 levels, which is less than competitors such as Beat Saber. But, it won’t stay like this for long. Pistol Whip gets very frequent updates with new levels and features. Beat Saber gets about 2 or 3 updates a year. Pistol Whip has only been out for around a year, and it has already had a ton of updates. In Beat Saber, they hardly ever release new free songs. Every single song is free in Pistol Whip, which is really nice. When I buy a game, I don’t want to also have to spend another $100 to get every song. That is why I trust Pistol Whip to provide me with consistent free content, rather than trusting Beat Saber, which only comes out with DLC.

Workout

This game isn’t only fun, it’s also an amazing workout. Pistol Whip is the first VR game that has actually made me sore. When I first played it, I only played about 6 levels, but after I was done, I was really sore. For the next two days, I could hardly walk, because my legs were so sore. If you played this game along with Beat Saber, you would get a great workout. Pistol Whip is a great leg workout, while Beat Saber is a great arm workout. Pistol Whip is my new favorite way to get some exercise into my day. I just have to make sure that I don’t play for too long. I don’t want to be in pain for another few days!
