The First Minecraft 1.17 Snapshot Has Released

The Main Point

A month ago, everyone got really excited about the new Minecraft: Caves and Cliffs update. Now, only a month later, we can already try out some of the new features of this update in the first Minecraft 1.17 snapshot. This snapshot is amazing. We can already try out tons of features, and they all feel great. I can’t wait for the full 1.17 release.

Minecraft updates are always great. They add so much new content to the game and make it so much more fun. So, when they announced the Caves and Cliffs update, the most requested update of all time, everyone got extremely excited. This update is going to add so many new features to the game, and they all seem so cool. But, sadly, we have to wait until next summer for this update. Thankfully, though, Minecraft Java edition has snapshots, which test out new features in the game. The first of these has already been released for the Caves and Cliffs update, and it adds many of the features coming in the upcoming update.

What new features can you try out?

There are many new features that you can try out in this snapshot. Some of them include amethyst, copper, bundles and more. It is great that we are able to try out all of these features so early on.

Amethyst

Amethyst is one of the main features included in this snapshot. You are now able to find amethyst geodes in any cave around the overworld. You can then mine the amethyst from these  geodes. This can be used to make amethyst blocks that can play musical sounds if you touch them. You can also grow your own amethyst clusters. Amethyst could end up being a very cool feature once it is fully released.

Bundles

One of the other main features that they added in this snapshot was bundles. You can craft these, and they will allow you to hold stacks of any Minecraft item together. As shown in the introduction video at Minecraft live, these bundles could be very useful. Anything to save some space in my inventory!

Copper

Copper was another big feature announced for the Caves and Cliffs update, and it has also been released in this snapshot. You can find this copper below ground, and then use it to craft multiple items. You can either craft a lightning rod, or a copper block. Lightning rods can be placed down, and this will protect you from lightning as long as you are nearby. Copper blocks can be used for builds, and, just like in real life, they will oxidize over time. Copper seems like a pretty cool addition, but I hope they add some more crafting recipes for it.

Candles

Candles weren’t a big thing at Minecraft Live, but if you payed attention, you would have noticed that they were in the deep caverns. Well, candles have also been added in this snapshot, and there are a lot of them. They come in all 16  colors, along with one uncolored variant. You can place up to four of them on one block, and they are also waterloggable. Also, you can even place one on a cake for someones birthday. This may not be the biggest feature, but it still is pretty cool.

Cauldrons

I don’t know if anyone else knew that this feature is coming, but I definitely didn’t. Cauldrons are now able to be filled with lava. This is a feature that makes perfect sense, and I’m not really sure why it wasn’t added  earlier. One cool thing about this, though, is that a cauldron filled with lava will give off a redstone signal with a strength of one. This may not be a big deal to most people, but I can definitely see this being used in redstone contraptions.

The Spyglass

The spyglass was shown at Minecraft Live, but it wasn’t very big. As you would expect, the spyglass allows you to see things from far away. I can see this being very useful for things like going on adventures, or keeping a close eye on your friends to make sure that they don’t break anything. If you want to craft a spyglass, it will take 2 copper and one amethyst shard. It is great that we are already able to test out this amazing item.

Tinted Glass

I don’t remember seeing tinted glass at Minecraft Live, either, but it seems pretty cool. Tinted glass is new type of glass that allows no light to pass through. I don’t really know much of a use for this item, but maybe someone can find a way to make it cool. You can craft it with a glass block and four amethyst shards (it seems like amethyst has quite a bit of recipes). Unlike normal glass, you don’t need silk touch to break tinted glass. I’m not really too sure about this item yet, but it can’t hurt the game.

What else has changed

Those may be the only new features added into the game, but they also made a few other changes. Dirt paths can now be made by using a shovel on dirt, simple fireworks can now be crafted using the recipe book, experience orbs can now sometimes merge when in large groups, and particles now appear when pistons break blocks. These changes are quite small, but there is also one  somewhat large change. This big change has to do with minecarts and rails. Minecarts and rails can now work in water. All rails can now be waterlogged and can not be broken by flowing water. Minecarts can also now go through water, but they will be slowed down. I can see this allowing for a ton of new, cool minecart rides. These features may not be that large, but I thought that I would include them, as they were also added in the snapshot.
