The Main Point

I have never been a Mac user, but it is still a big deal that Apple just announced their new macbooks. They made a lot of claims at this event, and the production quality just keeps getting better. But, are their claims true? Well, we will have to wait to find out, but we can at least talk about what we know now.

Apple just announced their new macbooks, and there isn’t too much different. They only changed a few things, but two of them were pretty big. That doesn’t mean that they were good, though. The new macs are now running on basically the same hardware as their Ipads. Yay, the new macs might have even more problems. And not only that, all of the macs now have basically the same specs, so the only difference is the design. I don’t think that I’m switching to mac.

What they announced

Apple didn’t really announce too many changes this year, but there were a few. Some are probably going to be good, where others aren’t. Most of the event was just the same stuff over again, so it wasn’t very interesting. But, here’s what they changed.

Apple Silicon

Yes, that’s right. Apple finally brought out their silicon chips for macs. This takes the form of their M1 chip, which they say contains the fastest cpu cores ever made. It has an eight core processor, eight core integrated gpu and even more security protocols. They claim that this chip has the highest performance per watt of any chip in the industry, which is probably true. Apple claims that the battery life of the mac can last up to 20 hours. Everything is built directly into the chip, so it can all easily communicate and share the same memory, which is also built into the chip. They claim that the cpu is 3x more powerful and the gpu is 6x more powerful, compared to a last gen mac. Also, Apple said that this new chip is faster than the leading Windows pc, but they didn’t tell us what that was. Rather this chip will live up to Apple’s hype, we don’t yet know.

Changes to the design

There aren’t many changes in the design of any of the macbooks. That said, there is one big change, and it has to do with the Macbook Air. The Macbook Air is now fanless. Apple claims that this is a good thing, as it can save battery life. But, that doesn’t mean it won’t impact thermals. It is so thin that without a fan, I don’t know how that thing can manage not to overheat. Another change that isn’t as big, but is still worth mentioning, is that all of the macs now have the same specs. Yes, that is right, the Mac Mini, Macbook Air and Macbook Pro, are all running on the same hardware. That means that the only differences between the 3, besides the price, are the screen, size, battery,  and the touchbar.

Big Sur

Apple also announced a new operating system for their macs. This is called Mac OS Big Sur. It has quite a few new features, but not all of them are good ( At least at the start). This new OS will allow for tasks to be automatically pinned to the correct core. And, on Apple silicon macs, it will allow for near instant wake up, which seems pretty cool. Those are the good features, but there are also some other features that aren’t as good. The main one of these is universal binary 2, which Apple tried to say would have pretty good support from the start. This is supposed to allow developers to easily make their apps work for ARM and x84 easily, but there are a few instances where it doesn’t. Photoshop is one example of this, as it won’t be available until 2021. This means that if you are using Adobe Creative Cloud, you probably won’t want to get a new mac yet. Unless you want to try out Rosetta 2 to see if it is good, wait to get a mac if you use Adobe.

Price

Apple didn’t change too much with the prices of the Mac lineup this year, but they did make some small changes. The Macbook Air is still starting at $999, though this may be a better deal than past years. This is due to the fact that the Macbook Pro and Macbook Air have roughly the same specs, with the only real differences being the touch bar, battery and size ( unless you get the 13 inch Macbook Pro). You can get the Macbook Pro 13 inch for $1299. Then there is the mac mini, which has had a price drop of $100 dollars. The price of the new mac mini is $699, and this is good, as it will likely be the least popular of the 3.

Release Date

Now that we have talked about what all they announced, you are probably wondering when it all releases. Well, let’s start with the first release, which is Big Sur. Big Sur is set to release on November 12th, 2020. This is only 2 days after it was announced, so it is a very fast release. All three of the new Macbooks are set to release on the same day, which is November 17th, 2020. This has to be one of the fastest releases that I have seen, because 5 days after the announcement is extremely fast. I can’t wait for these to come out and the reviews to start rolling in. Then, we can finally see if some of our expected issues are real.
