The Main Point

Hand Tracking might come to Vacation Simulator on Quest, and that would be amazing. It would be great to finally have a real hand tracking game on Quest. Until now, the feature has been pretty useless, as there are only demos for it. The Developers of the Game teased it on Twitter, and then released it right after.

Vacation Simulator is one of the most fun and random games available for VR. Now, it might be getting even better, on Quest at least. Hand Tracking may be coming to Vacation Simulator on Oculus Quest and Quest 2. The developers behind the game recently teased this feature in a tweet on Twitter. Now that hand tracking is in Vacation Simulator, it is the first real game with hand tracking. This could take it from a good game, to being one of the best games on Quest.

What Happened

What actually happened when hand tracking launched. Well, it all started with a tweet. Right before they launched the new hand tracking, Devin Reimer, Ceo of Owlchemy Labs, released a tweet showing it. This makes them one of the first to launch hand tracking since its release, and it is great to see bigger games receiving this feature. I have not tested hand tracking in Vacation Simulator yet, but I hope to. If they didn’t do it well, though, it will be very noticable. It would also make it a pointless feature, so they probably did it well. Vacation Simulator would be one of the best games to test hand tracking out in, and I hope it does well. It is really cool that Owlchemy Labs put this feature in. Hopefully this means that we will receive more hand tracking updates for games soon.

@ali_heston That question is very yikes. šŸ™‚ At first we thought for simplicity maybe we could build a straight up button mapping system for hand tracking. Haha, so wrong. The name of the game with hand tracking is user intentionality. Will dig into this in our dev blog for sure.

@ali_heston Thanks @ali_heston – I very much agree with most of your opinions the other day on twitter about hating hand tracking. “The hubris in telling people that there are rules now to interact with things with their own hands” is such a great line. I feel we can/need to do better.

How is it going to work

I have not tested this feature out, but it should be quite simple to set up. Hopefully you will either be able to have hand tracking on when you go into the game, or at least change it in the game’s settings. If you have to turn it on in any other way, that would be quite annoying, as those are really the only two ways that make sense. Not only can you use this feature on Quest 2, but also on the original Quest. The game has also recently been improved for Quest 2, adding better resolution and 90hz support. This should be the best hand tracking game on Quest by far.
