Intel Needs To Fix Their Processors

The Main Point

So far, this year has been really good for computers. We have had huge graphics jumps and the new series of Ryzen processors. But, it isn’t all good news. Intel needs to fix their processors. Why? Well, Rocket Lake is still going to be using the 14nm process. If Intel can’t change, there could be huge impacts not only on them, but also on the whole industry.

It is no secret that Intel has been losing the cpu war to AMD lately. But, do you know how bad it really is? Intel is so far behind at this point that it isn’t even funny anymore. Just a few years ago, Intel was the best. But now, it just gets worse each year. Rocket Lake, Intel’s new cpu set to launch next year, is still going to be running the 14nm process. If they don’t manage to change soon, there could be some very big consequences. And these consequences might not only be for Intel, but also the whole industry.

What's wrong

There are a lot of things wrong at Intel. First of all, Rocket Lake. Rocket Lake is the new generation of processors that Intel is supposed to be coming out with early next year. The problem with this is, it is still going to be on the 14nm process, rather than 10nm. This means that it has far less transistors than competitors. AMD already has chips available for purchase that run on the 7nm process. The second problem with this is that Rocket Lake is just a backport of Intel’s 10nm 10th gen laptop processors. This means that Rocket Lake will be less powerful. Also, Intel had to lower the i9 core count to 8, because they can’t fit 10 in a chip using the 14nm process.

Intel’s second problem is that they planned on launching their 10nm process back in 2016. That is over four years ago. Intel is quite far behind schedule. They were also supposed to release 7nm next year, but that has also been delayed. The fact that Intel is using 14nm for their desktop Rocket Lake processors means that their 10nm process still isn’t ready. And if they can’t get it ready soon, there are going to be some big problems.

What is Intel going to do

There are two ways that this could go. One good way ( which is less likely), and one way that would change Intel forever. The first of these ( the good way) is the one where Intel is able to get their 10nm process ready in time. This is quite unlikely, though, as they are supposed to be launching their Alder Lake cpus with the 10nm process. Intel is supposed to launch these cpus in the second half of 2021, which only gives them a little more than 6 months to get it ready. It will be quite difficult for them to get their 10nm process ready in that short of a time, so the other way that this could go is much more likely.

The second way that this could go is much different. Intel could end up giving up on making their own chips. Yes, I know that that is hard to believe, but it might be what happens. Currently, Intel’s 10nm process is not ready. If they can’t get it ready in time for Alder Lake, they will likely look to a third party manufacturer for their chips. This would make Intel quite similar to AMD, which already does this. If this does happen, Intel will be very different from the Intel we know now. It is possible that Intel could already be thinking about this option. They probably are, because if they can’t figure out 10nm in the next 6 months, it will be what they have to do. And that would not only change Intel, but also the whole PC industry as we know it.
