Chromebooks Outsold Macs In 2020

The Main Point

Chromebooks outsold Macs in 2020, and this is the first time that has ever happened. Chrome OS has grown a ton this year, and their market share has increased greatly. This is probably mainly due to schools buying them due to the pandemic, but there is a possibility that they are starting to expand into the main PC market, too.

Chromebooks have never been the most popular PCs on the market. They are normally cheap and generally don’t have too many features. But, in 2020, Chromebooks have started to gain a lot of popularity. For the first time, there were actually more Chromebooks than Macs sold throughout the entire year. That is pretty crazy. I personally don’t like Chromebooks at all, but there must be some people out there that do.

Why are so many Chromebooks being sold?

Now that you know that Chromebooks are greatly increasing in sales, you probably are wondering why so many are selling. Well, the majority of the sales are largely due to the pandemic. This would mainly include schools. Chromebooks were already pretty popular in schools before Covid-19. They are cheap, easy to use and students can do all the work that they need to do on them. And, when the pandemic happened, everything had to go online. This probably caused many schools to need a laptop to send home with their students so that they could do their school work. That makes Chromebooks the obvious option. So, many schools have been buying a ton of Chromebooks this year. The normal consumer market may have also increased in Chromebook sales this year, too, because many people were probably looking for a cheap work laptop.

What does this mean?

Increasing Chromebook sales could have a lot of huge impacts on the PC market. First of all, this is lowering the Windows and Mac OS market share. That means that Microsoft and Apple aren’t selling as many PCs as they used to. If Chromebook sales keep increasing, it could also cause Windows and Mac OS to get more updates ( hopefully without bugs when it comes to Windows 10), meaning that we could receive more cool features. Another great thing that this could cause is more developers to make and update apps for Chrome OS. As Chrome OS becomes a larger part of the market, developers will need to put their apps on it to make sure that their app does well. This could possibly make Chrome OS a much better option for gamers and other people looking for certain apps. Google would definitely need to update the Chromebook hardware, though.
