The Main Point

EA is working on a feature to end waiting for games to download, and that would be amazing. They recently patented a way to stream games while they are downloading. I would love to be able to play my games as soon as I buy them, rather than waiting for long download times.

EA is one of the largest game companies in the world. Lately, they haven’t been doing too well, though. The large majority of their latest games have had a ton of bugs. And, they have not been very good in general. They do have some good ideas, though. We now know that they are working on a way to end waiting for games to download in order to be able to play them. If this feature does get released, that would be amazing.

What exactly is EA doing?

EA is working on a pretty advanced system to stop people from having to wait for games to download. EA recently patented this technology, and hopefully they will actually end up releasing it soon. This system will first check if a game is downloaded. If the game is not yet downloaded, you will be able to stream the game from an EA server.  The game would then download in the background. As soon as the game has finished downloading, it will transition you from the streamed version of the game to the local version. This system seems like it will work extremely well. I do not yet know whether EA will actually release this feature or not, but if they do, I hope that other developers and online game stores start to use it, too. Getting rid of the long wait after you buy a game would be great.

What is the use of this?

This is an insanely useful feature. It is probably the most useful feature that has been worked on for an online games store in years. No longer having to wait for your games to download would be amazing. Some games have small things that you can play until the game has finished downloading, but that still isn’t the actual game. This new technology would allow you to play the full game before it is even downloaded. The only problem with this is internet. Downloading a game takes a lot of bandwidth. Playing games also takes up a large amount of bandwidth, especially if you are streaming the game from a remote server. This could mean that people who don’t have extremely fast internet would not be able to use this feature, at least not fully. But, if this is a free feature, that is not really a problem. I really hope that this feature does release, because it would be great to try out.
